Doors. Who needs em: so much wasted space, so much energy blockage.
Upstairs, we ditched the heavy saloon-style swinging bedroom doors we had for unobtrusive pocket doors. Complications led us to go with sliding barn doors instead. As you know from this previous post, our added half-bath is high function + high concept. The DISCO POWDER room, steps away from our bed, continues to blow our minds and make us smile. It’s ridiculous, and truly a place where style/function meets pleasure/comedy. And bathrooms do require doors. I thought this one needed some apt wayfinding signage, so while Mike was on tour promoting SPARKLE HARD, I painted this surprise.
INSPIRATION:
The ‘signage’ is a riff on the DAFT PUNK logo font and a nod to the genius myth making imagery of that band. [If you don’t know about DAFT PUNK, read this. Then go buy this, their masterpiece made with Giorgio Moroder and Nile Rodgers.] In the DISCO POWDER room, it feels like you’ve entered a chill robot rave on the set of a Michel Gondry movie, and now the door reflects that.
Once I had the typography just right in Illustrator/Photoshop, I gave the phrase a jaunty tilt. I made a pattern from the design that felt right with the door dimensions. Then, I blew that way up and made a physical stencil grid with printer paper. I taped the grid to the door, traced the design, and painted it on. I wanted the results to be subtle, so I chose metallic paint in a similar color to that of the semi-gloss base color already on the door. It does sparkle pretty hard.
